Thursday, March 8, 2012

“All right, welcome to The Nerves Plimsouls Beat Breakaways show…” so announced musician Peter Case as a piece of rock and roll history went down in San Diego last night as Case and Paul Collins, co-founders of the seminal power pop punkers The Nerves, took the stage together at Bar Pink for the first time in over 30 years.

Along with guitarist Jack Lee the trio were responsible for the self-titled 1976 The Nerves EP that brought the world “Hanging On The Telephone” (later covered by Blondie). After Case and Collins split from Lee they formed the short-lived Breakaways before Collins formed The Beat and Case formed The Plimsouls. By 1985 both groups would be history — albeit a history with one of the richest songwriting legacies in the whole of rock and roll and it was wonderfully on display as the two old sparring partners ripped through a set of 25 songs with one classic tune following another. The place was packed elbow to asshole with every San Diego hipster worth their salt in attendance [including O, Gar Wood, Davey Graham, Bart Mendoza, Dennis Borlek, Louis Mello, Hector & Victor Penalosa, Joe Camacho, Peter & Teresa Barosso, Rob Bird, A.J. Larue, Brandy Bell, Chris Nelson and Layne Sterling]. The vocals were occasionally ragged (but right) and the rhythm section of bassist Timm Buechler and drummer Amos Pitsch kept the set tough and taut. Summer Twins opened the show.

These songs prove that great compositions never die, they’re just waiting for someone to breath life into them once again. One of my favorite moments of the show: Case stating that the first time he went on the internet and did a Google search on The Nerves the bio said Paul Collins, born 1956 drums. Peter Case, born 1954 bass. Jack Lee, born 1922 clarinet.” Peter was riffing like a mad man between songs relating about how he wrote his first song at the age of eleven (title: “Stay Away From Me”). Also there was quite the riff on “I’m sick of getting fucked. I’m sick of getting fucked, that’s the name of this tour.” Collins: “Oh Peter when we broke up I cried like a baby.” Case: “Bullshit!” Wow, you wonder why they ever stopped. I’m sure that these 28 gigs that they have lined up will serve as some form of therapy or at least as a reminder of why these songs were so great in the first place and why maybe they had to each pursue their own path because a ship can only stand the authority of one captain at the helm and neither of these gentlemen are suited to be junior officers. Not by a long shot.
Well, here it is the week before Thanksgiving and, if I may, I’d like to take up two minutes of your precious time to update you on a thing or three from this little corner of the universe…

Well, here it is the week before Thanksgiving and, if I may, I’d like to take up two minutes of your precious time to update you on a thing or three from this little corner of the universe…

2011 has been an interesting (and challenging) year and I can’t believe that it is almost history. I hope that the flagging economy and financial woes of many folks have passed you by this season. I am frequently reminded of the old adage: “Count your blessings wherever you may find them.”

I am getting out the word about a few things this holiday season; like any working artist I am looking for gigs…gigs as a musician, gigs as a disc jockey, gigs requiring travel or gigs that allow me to stay home. Again, like many folks I’m just looking for work and for the ability to continue spreading my love of music, entertainment and education out here in the world.

And to that glorious end I have put together a number of new promotional items. To promote my Spin Wizard mobile DJ business (now in its twelfth year) I have created the ultimate set of music playlists that will turn any party that you throw into a celebratory EVENT. Out of the 120,000+ tracks currently available from my audio library you can now search through the top 13,000 tunes that I bring with me every time I spin. You are encouraged to check out my bag of tricks by downloading these PDF files here:

link: https://rcpt.yousendit.com/1274832108/13917757c68ead08d24daffbad88d9e8]

I know that some of you are still looking for entertainment for the holiday season whether for a corporate function or a private event and I still have some slots available from the first of December through the New Year so if you are looking for a mobile DJ/MC please give me a call. I would love to speak with you about providing the perfect sounds for your next party.

Or…if it is live music that you are after I have just uploaded a demo onto YouTube of yours truly performing solo acoustic here in San Diego a few weeks ago and this brief montage will give you an idea of the kind of sounds I bring with just my voice and an acoustic guitar. A HUGE thanks to my friend Steve Laub for his superb audio/visual skills and to our buddy Dave Foster for his masterful editing. Check out the demo here:

http://youtu.be/a4n6f4xukHo

One of the best things about 2011 is that I’ve played more gigs this year than probably ever before; solo acoustic performances, bass duties in The Assumptions, vocal and bass duties in Listening To Rocks and my summertime cover band project playing bass and singing with Got It Covered [aka ADD/C]. I re-activated my artistic tendencies as well by doing a ten-panel art installation at the Ruby Room back in August. The show (which is still hanging) is entitled A Royal Flush and if you would to check it out you are encouraged to go to my tumblr page:

http://jonkanis.tumblr.com/post/9588767303/a-royal-flush-multi-media-art-installation-by-jon

For those of you who have been following my internet radio program STATE CONTROLLED RADIO I am happy to announce that I have plans to reactivate the show once again in 2012 after being on hiatus for a lot of 2011. I have, however, archived all 240 programs that have been produced to date and if you missed any of them when they were first webcast you are strongly encouraged to go to my blog and check them out. Previous interviews on SCR include illuminating conversations with the likes of Peter Case, Pat MacDonald, Neil Innes, Henry Diltz, Jon Auer, Tony Sheridan, 4 Out Of 5 Doctors, Barry & The Remains, Gary Heffern, Will Sexton, Mike Keneally, Will Kimbrough, Tommy Womack and Charlie Cheney — not to mention such San Diego luminaries as Mike Stax, Steve Poltz, Gregory Page, Cindy Lee Berryhill, The Truckee Brothers, Bart Mendoza and legendary disc jockey Jim McInnes. The multi-part programs on Frank Zappa, Neil Young, Jack Nitzsche and the history of music in the 20th century are fascinating as well. To check out any and all SCR programs click on the following:

Well, that ought to be enough information for you to chew on for the time being. Please let me know if I can be of any service to you, either now, into the holidays or anytime in the new year and I wish you all the best for a fun and fabulous holiday season for you and all your loved ones.

Thanks for reading, thanks for being a friend and I hope to see you down the road soon.

Today was an exercise in public performance to capture a video for promotional purposes. It appears to be high time for Jon Kanis to have an acoustic performance reel and today is the day to make it happen.

Spent two hours performing at Tucker’s Corner in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego. My good buddy Steve Laub (who is an superb videographer) came out to capture me in all my glory. Our friend Dave Foster is editing together 30 second snippets from 10 of the performances into a composite reel to put up on YouTube. I want to get out and see the world and earn my keep by singing for my supper. Coming soon to a living room, barroom, theater, pool side or cafe terrace near you…

Oh! and muchas gracias to Tucker and Paul at the North Park Nursery for their hospitality.
