I received a call from Brittni to perform at this evening’s Midnight Oil show at The Ruby Room 48 hours before the event and when I showed up to play my 10:30 PM set it turned out that the other two acts on the bill (Corey Cottrell and Zack Kingsley according to Facebook) were a complete no-show. I told Paul behind the bar what Peter Buck of R.E.M. used to say back in the ’80s: “It’s amazing how far in this business you can get just by showing up for your appointments.” I guess that’s true of ALL businesses, but particularly the music biz. Musicians are already rightly regarded as a bit on the flaky side; not showing up for a gig kind of seals the deal. Instead of playing one set I was invited by Paul to play “as long as I liked.” Since my motto tends to be Go Big or Go Home I ended up playing two and a half hours…suffice to say that I had a blast. A guy named Bons came in with a small posse around 11:30 to celebrate his birthday and he and his date danced up a storm in front of the bandstand for several numbers. Talked to an extremely interesting computer engineer named Steve throughout the night and had a fantastic conversation with him around politics and religion…two of my favorite subjects. Sometime after midnight a duo of percussion (a guy named Jay) and acoustic guitar (a female whose name I didn’t catch) came in and asked to play when I was finished, so they ended up taking over at 12:40. Good times all around. Still need to replace that 10th panel on A Royal Flush…

A paid audition (you can’t beat that). It is definitely an effort to load-in, find parking and load-out downtown but the cash makes it easier to bear. A good gig and fun to play during Restaurant Week. Thanks to Leti for getting us the gig and to the staff at The Lincoln Room (especially Dave the manager).

On September 17th Adam Gimbel turned a big forty and he had parties all weekend long and asked GIC to play at his Sunday party at the Riviera Club. Two very fun sets for no money, but the food wasn’t bad and the staff at the Riviera are awesome. It was fun. Time to get some REAL PAYING GIGS with this group. We are ready to be getting paid. Looking forward to playing The Lincoln Room this Thursday for $$$. Oh, yes.

We were supposed to play for three hours but we got cut to one as there was another band (Schitzophonics) also double booked to perform. It all worked out okay as the Schitzophonics played a lively and entertaining set and we enjoyed a pretty reasonable crowd with some of our favorite hipsters in attendance. Davey ran great sound and Miles was great behind the bar and GIC played another tight set. The band is sounding great. Very cool.

There was NO ONE in the house except Justin the bartender and Chris running sound (well, maybe there were one or two patrons but not many) but, NEVERTHELESS, the band sounded absolutely fantastic tonight and I was having so much fun that I didn’t want to quit when we stopped around 11:15 PM. I think Kevin’s skydive from the previous Saturday really fired the band up. Victor and I were totally in the pocket all night long. Tight and taut. Looking forward to the gigs this weekend at Eleven and the Riviera Club.

A fun, 45-minute set playing solo acoustic at the inaugural MIDNIGHT OIL event at the Ruby Room. Jonny Tar opened with a 45-minute set; Joshua Napier closed the night. Fun. Good to see John Vaughn.
On Thursday afternoon at approximately 3:30 PM, 5 million people throughout Southern California and Western Arizona experienced a power outage that was still being experienced by some residents of the region on Friday morning.
When the power went out I decided to go out into the neighborhood (Golden Hill/South Park) and see what was happening rather than stay inside a boiling hot house with no fan to move the air around. I first went to my corner store (Miller’s Market) and their doors were locked with one of the employees inside telling me they would be open in an hour. That didn’t happen. I then walked four blocks over to Hamilton’s Tavern where Hannah and Jeff were tending bar and serving beers as long as customers had exact change. I sat in the corner with a Green Flash Imperial when three gals and a guy came over to play a game of pool in the near dark and said “too bad somebody doesn’t have a guitar.” I said I had my guitar with me and if they wanted me to play I’d be happy to, just check with the bartender. The bartender said that it was cool and I proceeded to play several songs on my acoustic (Tangled Up In Blue, I Melt With You, Where Is Joe Strummer When You Need Him?, Think It Over, Squeeze Box, Cinnamon Girl, The Breakup Song and Welcome To The Working Week). At approximately 5 PM the management decided to shut down the bar, last orders were given and everyone was shooed out into the street.
I then walked four doors down to Alchemy Restaurant and poked my head in and Ron Troyano (one of Alchemy’s owners) asked me if I wanted a beer. I said “sure” and sat down while Ron and his partner Matt Thomas were briefing their staff about how to avoid the least amount of waste with the food that they had in their refrigerator. Luckily they were able to put much of their foodstuffs on ice. Down the block on Beech Street at Grant’s Marketplace they were giving away free ice cream. Everyone in the hood was making a run on the bags of ice at the local liquor store.
I saw friends walking around the neighborhood from inside Alchemy, including Scotty Hoopes who was out on 30th Street taking pictures and documenting the moment. I invited him into the bar and he sat down and had a beer and then I fell into a really fun conversation with Dok Whiston, a local artist who is currently showing some great work at the restaurant. Then someone asked me if I would play some music and I launched into a series of songs that I could play in the dark by candlelight. They included: Night Moves, Tangled Up In Blue, Imagine, Don’t Let Me Down, You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away, Things We Said Today, I Saw Her Standing There, With A Little Help From My Friends, The Letter and Brown Eyed Girl.
At approximately 7 PM the management at Alchemy took their gas powered grille and parked it out on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant and started grilling up chicken and other perishables. They put out buns and condiments for the staff and friends that had gathered. The beer kept flowing and the songs kept coming, including a darling 10-year old girl who wanted to sing a song together so we did a duet on John Lennon’s Imagine. Later the same girl and Sarah Trigg’s daughter Bethany did an awesome acapella duet; first on an Adelle song and then they followed up with a tune by Green Day. I played a game of dominoes with Silvana and her sister Laura, talked about conspiracy theories and generally had a great time overall. Said goodbye to everyone and thanked them for a truly marvelous time. It was delightful to see how so many people in the neighborhood pulled together in the face of this minor glitch of our present grid-oriented reality. I walked the four blocks back to my house by the light of the moon (no street or traffic lights for illumination) and by sheer force of habit made my way back to the front door. I found Layne with a pair of flashlights navigating the dark. I’m reminded that this is what folks had to contend with a hundred years ago: a culture without electricity, phones, TVs, radios or internet. I decided to go outside and enjoy the stars and as I went to check the time on my battery powered cellular phone (10:16 PM) the lights in the bathroom sputtered back to life, signaling reconnection to the power grid in our hood. The juice had been off approximately seven hours and I ended up having a wonderful time the entire evening. Thanks to Ron & Matt and everyone at Alchemy and to the good folks at Hamilton’s Tavern.
