Punk Rock Lotto at Bar Pink, San Diego, CA [04.28.11]

I found out through my friend and Listening To Rocks band mate Roger Morrison that John Reis is organizing an event at his Bar Pink nightclub entitled PUNK ROCK LOTTO. The idea is this: anyone who is a musician can put his or her name and their instrument of choice into a bucket and Reis randomly draws names from the bucket.  The first round of picks was for drummers so Reis picked six drummers and they formed the first round of the “draft picks” as he put it.  After that six bassists were paired up with the drummers.  Then six guitarists.  And then another six guitarists. And then a few “misc.” instrumentalists. Vocalists are to be selected amongst the various instrumentalists.

At 10:15 PM the selection process began and by 11:30 PM six bands were created that did not exist an hour before.

So, after the five newly minted band members had approximately ten minutes to get to know one another everyone had to come up with a name for their band. I thought some of the names were pretty cool but they all got shot down when submitted to the crowd. Five of the six bands opted to pull a name out of Reis’ bucket with other band name choices.  Once you picked a name out of the bucket, you were stuck with it. We were the only band that stuck with our self-selected name. I think it was Ryan who wanted us to use the name The Beta Waves.  Ryan referenced Salvador Dali and I suggested Persistence Of Memory as a name but Jason insisted that we had to be Hezbollah La La. As it is it then. Reis wrote on the board Hezbollah-La-Las…

Band #1 is Spock’s Ass.  Band #2 is Download Syndrome.  Band #3 is The Leaning Tower Of Shit.  Band #4 is The Hard Comes. Band #5 is Hezbollah La La. Band #6 is Cro-Magnon.

And so it goes that I am playing bass (and singing) in band #5 Hezbollah La La, which also includes guitarist Ryan Allen, guitarist Kevin Lau, banjo player Brandy Bell and drummer Jason Noble. We have four weeks to write five original songs and perform a twenty minute set alongside our other five bands on Saturday, May 28th at Bar Pink. The line up of the six bands will be determined by the luck of the draw on the night of the gig. We need to come up with five songs so I proposed that all five members of our group should bring in one original song each and then we will work out arrangements over the next four weeks of rehearsals.  I am hopeful and determined to show up at the first rehearsal with a song to offer up…and by Sunday night I do. It is titled [The Human] Race [Is A] Riot [the lyrics follow below]. This should be a hoot…see ya on May 28th!

[The Human] Race [Is A] Riot

The time has come today…

To form a race riot – wild in the streets
Race riot – it’s beyond belief
Race riot with everything that you say
Your manna is my mantra and the time has come today

To worship the Sun as the Noble One
The night becomes the day when we are all beyond cliché
A 1000 ideas forming in my head
Will never drown out the words that you just said

And they scream race riot – faster than all your fears
Race riot – baby drowning in my own tears
Race riot – with everything that you say
Your manna is my mantra and my mind is blown today

Taxation tariff and traffic fines
El evil presidente who keeps saying “You’re Fired”
Collateral, lateral – now what’s in your head
The FBI wants everyone under the CIA read

Race riot – faster than all your fears
Race riot – drowning in my own tears
Race riot – with everything that you say
Your manna is my mantra and my mind is blown today

‘Cuz now’s the time
I won’t debate you Jerry with a Dole line
When Socialism’s such a “dirty” word
Well, two fingers up yours!
‘Cuz that’s the way that it is
We’re in this maze of “sin” and now its ollie-ollie-all-in

To worship the Sun as the Noble One
The night becomes the day when we are all beyond cliché
A 1000 ideas forming in my head
Will never drown out the words that you just said

And they scream race riot – pass it on, the baton
Race riot – dropping love as da bomb
Race riot – and when we hit the finishing line
Your manna is my mantra and we’re here to let it shine

‘Cuz now’s the time
I won’t debate you Jerry in a dole line
When Socialism’s such a “dirty” word
Well, two fingers up yours!
‘Cuz that’s the way that it is
We’re in this maze of “sin” it’s ollie-ollie-all-in

The human race is a riot
The human race baby it is a riot
The human race it is a riot

And the time has come today…

Gary Heffern’s Blood On Fire, Cardiac Kidz, The Casbah, San Diego, CA [04.06.11]

Two appearances by Gary Heffern at The Casbah in the space of four days! Sunday night’s performance of The Penetrators (their third reunion since 2006) was a blast accompanied by a (typically) blistering set by The Loons and some great high energy music from Social Spit.  But tonight is the real deal; if the Penetrators shows of the last five years have had the ring of a high school reunion (30 years on + for most of these folks, myself included) Gary Heffern’s Blood On Fire is where Heffern is NOW and that is a beautiful thing to behold.  His latest CD on import imprint Glitterhouse entitled Gary Heffern & Beautiful People is a fantastic collection of songs that has Heffern contributing to a group collective of fellow musicians from Heffern’s native Finland. Tonight’s set features four tracks from the new CD with selections from Heffern’s other solo efforts Painful Days, Consolation and Askew.

The set began with the rousing eight-minute anthem Hand Of The Devil (which also kicks off the new album) and I find it extremely compelling.  In short, I love it.  Gary is ably backed by a pick-up band of first rate San Diegians including Victor Penalosa, Ray Brandes, Eric Bacher, Mark Zardnowski and Joe Piper. The set rumbles along with great speed and for a group that has never played publicly together there are few visible hiccups.  After eleven stirring Heffern originals Gary calls up a couple of friends (Earl Brooks, who drove all the way from Sacramento and San Diego local Joyce Rooks) to join in on The Band’s The Weight.  Don’t know when Gary will be back in San Diego but I hope that it is soon.

And on a final note…stay tuned for A Conversation With Gary Heffern on State Controlled Radio coming in May!  Three hours of music and conversation from one of San Diego’s finest musical sons.  Thanks for the connection Gary and thanks for all the great music.  Safe travels back to Finland.
