This was the fourth (and last time) I saw Bob Dylan perform with Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers.  I saw this show with my friend Steve Kobashigawa and had a hell of a time.  I did not know at the time how much history was being made.  I sure am glad that I was there…

This was the third time I saw Bob Dylan perform with Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers.  I saw this show with a number of Dylan freaks including Paul Williams.  This was one of the rare times that the band played Lenny Bruce.  Band Of The Hand would be history as well soon after.

This was the second time I saw Bob Dylan perform, again with Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers, five days after the San Diego debut.  The ticket that Paul Williams traded me ended up being in the third row, right in front of Dylan.  This was thrilling, but I had promised to tape the show for Jerry Weddle and had borrowed his tape recorder and I was paranoid during the entire performance that I would be discovered taping and get kicked out.  Eventually I relaxed and no harm was done and 23 years later I’m glad that a document of this show exists.  These were amazing shows to me and I would see Dylan & Petty perform together two more times in Costa Mesa the following week…that’s four times in less than ten days.  I guess we were all pretty nutty for Dylan at the time…still am.  But I think that this was the best backing band Bob ever had.  And it took the Heartbreakers to a whole other level after 1987.  Wow, what a blast it was.  On a personal note, this is the last time I would ever see Kathleen Keilch.

This was the very first time I ever saw Bob Dylan perform, on the very first date of his 1986-87 North American tour with Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers.  Dylan had already performed in Japan & Australia with TP & The HBs but this was the first gig in the U.S.  I met Paul Williams for the first time on this day.  He and I traded Dylan tickets.  He came down to San Diego from the Bay Area to see the debut concert and I had an extra ticket and swapped him for an extra ticket that he had for The Greek Theatre in Berkeley five days later.  As I remember we were in the 18th row.

This concert was significant for me for many reasons, but it was historical for the sheer volume of songs that Dylan and Petty performed…I believe that this might have been the longest set of the U.S. tour and that it was the only time that Got My Mind Made Up was ever performed live.  Petty had the song and Dylan re-wrote some of the words and a recording wound up on Knocked Out Loaded.  The only performance I really care for on that album.
